Sodium Pyruvate
(USAN)

Chemical information
Piruvato de sodio. Sodium α-ketopropionate; sodium 2-oxopropanoate.
Chemical formula: C3H4NaO3 = 111.1.
CAS — 127-17-3 (pyruvic acid); 113-24-6 (sodium pyruvate).
Profile
Sodium pyruvate has been given intravenously in the diagnosis of disorders of pyruvate metabolism.
◊ Relative serum concentrations of lactate and pyruvate after a 10-minute intravenous infusion of sodium pyruvate 500 mg/kg have been used as an aid to the diagnosis of disorders of pyruvate metabolism.1
Death shortly after pyruvate loading in a 9-year-old child with restrictive cardiomyopathy suggests that the test should not be performed when cardiac function is decreased.21. Dijkstra U, et al.
