Adenine is a purine base and one of the components of adenosine nucleotides that form nucleic acids. It is also a constituent of many coenzymes. It has been used to extend the storage life of whole blood and has also been given for the management of white blood cell disorders and alcoholism. Adenine hydrochloride has been used similarly.
