Mandelic acid has bacteriostatic properties and is used as a 1% flushing solution for the maintenance of indwelling urinary catheters. Mandelic acid and acetyl mandelic acid are used topically in preparations for the treatment of acne. It was formerly given orally in the treatment of urinary-tract infections, usually as the ammonium or calcium salt. Mandelic acid is a component of methenamine mandelate.
